21 September 2026 | Vacant Veld & Garden Refuse Fire – Flora Park, Tzaneen
Initial Report:
At approximately 19:03 on 21 September 2026, a member of the community reported thick smoke hanging over Flora Park in the Jasmyn Street area.
At that stage, no active fire had yet been reported and the source of the smoke was unknown.
Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service dispatched a response vehicle at approximately 19:05 to investigate and locate the source.
Situation on Arrival:
After searching through the Flora Park area, responders traced the dense smoke to a vacant veld in Petunia Street, where vegetation and accumulated garden refuse had been set alight.
The vacant property, situated between residential properties, had been used for the dumping of garden refuse.
The accumulated waste created a significant additional fuel load, contributing to the intensity of the fire and the large amount of dense smoke being produced.
With houses situated nearby, preventing the fire from spreading beyond the vacant stand became an immediate priority.
Firefighting Operations:
Asterix worked alongside Tzaneen EST and Mopani Fire Services to contain the fire and protect the surrounding residential properties.
The combination of veld vegetation and dense heaps of garden refuse made suppression more difficult, as compacted garden waste can retain heat and continue smouldering even after visible flames have been brought under control.
The fire was successfully contained by approximately 21:18.
Some smoke remained visible after containment as sections of the accumulated garden refuse continued smouldering.
Working Together:
Asterix extends sincere appreciation to Tzaneen EST and Mopani Fire Services for their assistance in bringing the incident under control.
A special thank you goes to Tzaneen EST for their continued willingness to work alongside us. It is genuinely a pleasure working with such a well-organised team, and incidents such as this again demonstrate what can be achieved when knowledge, experience, manpower and equipment are combined.
When we work together, we win together.
We also thank the community member who reported the unexplained smoke. At the time of the initial report there was no confirmed fire, but the notification allowed Asterix to investigate, locate the source and begin responding to the developing incident.
Operational Commitment
Outcome:
The fire was successfully contained without spreading to the neighbouring houses.
Although the main fire was under control by approximately 21:18, some of the accumulated garden refuse continued to smoulder and produce smoke.
The incident once again demonstrated how dumped combustible material on vacant land can substantially increase the severity of a veldfire within a residential area.
Vacant Stands Are Not Dumping Areas:
Vacant stands should not be treated as convenient dumping areas for garden refuse or other waste.
Accumulated branches, grass cuttings, leaves and other combustible material create a concentrated fuel load that can cause an otherwise manageable veldfire to burn more intensely and for longer periods.
When this waste is dumped on vacant land between houses, the fire risk extends directly to neighbouring properties.
Heavy smoke from burning or smouldering garden refuse can also affect people and animals in the surrounding area, particularly those experiencing respiratory or breathing difficulties.
Keeping vacant stands free from dumped refuse is therefore not only a matter of cleanliness — it is an important part of community fire prevention and safety.
Community Reporting Works:
Early reporting of fires and emergencies allows available resources to be activated as quickly as possible. The sooner a developing fire is reported, the better the opportunity responders have to limit spread, protect property and prevent a smaller incident from becoming a much larger emergency. For urgent incidents, the fastest way to contact Asterix remains the 24/7 Emergency Line.
