Timber Drying Kiln Fire – Nkowankowa Sawmill
Initial Report:
At approximately 09:45 on 14 September 2026, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service received a report of a fire at a local sawmill in Nkowankowa. The fire involved a timber drying kiln, an enclosed chamber used to dry timber after it has been cut into planks.
Situation on Arrival:
On arrival, responders found that timber inside the enclosed drying kiln was burning. The kiln was built in a container-like configuration, making direct access to the main body and hotspots of the fire difficult. Because the timber was stacked relatively densely inside the kiln, heat and fire were trapped deep within the load. Openings had to be cut into the side of the kiln to gain better access and direct water onto the burning timber. Another major challenge was the limited water supply on the premises, together with the absence of fire hydrants. Fires involving densely stacked timber can require large volumes of water, particularly where heat remains trapped inside an enclosed structure. Mopani Fire Services also responded and provided valuable assistance in containing the fire.
Operational Commitment
Outcome:
By approximately 12:58, the main fire had been contained and Asterix returned to base. Mopani Fire Services remained on scene to continue the final damping-down process and deal with remaining hotspots. The incident demonstrated the challenges associated with timber kiln fires, particularly limited access, dense fuel loading and inadequate on-site water supply. Asterix extends sincere appreciation to Mopani Fire Services for their excellent work and assistance in helping bring the incident under control.
Community Reporting Works:
Early reporting of fires and emergencies allows available resources to be activated as quickly as possible. The sooner a developing fire is reported, the better the opportunity responders have to limit spread, protect property and prevent a smaller incident from becoming a much larger emergency. For urgent incidents, the fastest way to contact Asterix remains the 24/7 Emergency Line.
