Our Story

Asterix Fire & Rescue is the operational identity of Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC, a registered South African Non-Profit Company based in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

Although formally registered as an NPC on 1 October 2025, Asterix’s operational roots began years earlier through hands-on firefighting, emergency response and community involvement.

What started as an internal firefighting capability gradually developed into a dedicated fire, rescue and emergency response service as demand increased, incidents became more complex and communities increasingly relied on Asterix during emergencies.
Today, Asterix operates with structured 24/7 dispatch and coordination, trained responders, specialised firefighting and rescue equipment, pre-incident planning, fire-safety preparedness services and Priority Membership for residential, commercial, industrial, accommodation and school properties.
As the organisation continues to grow, our focus remains the same: professional emergency response, practical preparedness and coordinated support when people and property are at risk.

Community-Focused. Professionally Operated. Member Supported.

What We Do

Asterix Fire & Rescue provides professional fire, rescue and emergency response services across the Greater Tzaneen and surrounding service area, including:
  • Structural fire response
  • Veld, wildland and forest firefighting
  • Vehicle fire response
  • Motor vehicle accident response
  • Rescue and emergency support
  • Basic medical first response within trained limits
  • Emergency dispatch and coordination
  • Asterix Priority Membership for residential, commercial, industrial, accommodation and school properties
  • Fire-safety inspections and preparedness services
  • Fire risk assessments, evacuation planning and drills
  • Pre-incident property planning and emergency coordination

Where additional resources or statutory services are required, Asterix works alongside relevant Fire Services, EMS, SAPS, Traffic Services, Disaster Management, security providers and recognised emergency-response partners to support a coordinated incident response.

Our Role & Boundaries

Asterix Fire & Rescue is a professional fire, rescue and emergency response service. Our role is operational, but there are clear boundaries to what we provide.
Asterix is not:
  • A municipal or statutory Fire Service
  • An ambulance service
  • A statutory emergency authority
Asterix provides independent fire, rescue and emergency response within our trained capabilities, available resources and operational area.
We respond to structural, veld, wildland, forest and vehicle fires; motor vehicle accidents; rescue incidents; and other emergencies within our operational capabilities. We also provide basic medical first response within trained limits, emergency coordination, fire-safety preparedness and pre-incident planning.
Where an incident falls under a statutory authority or established incident-command structure, Asterix works within that command structure and cooperates with the relevant Fire Services, EMS, SAPS, Traffic Services, Disaster Management and other authorised agencies.

We do not replace statutory authority — we provide professional response capability alongside it.

Our Mission

Our mission is to protect lives, property and the environment through professional preparedness, response and coordination.
PREPARE
Fire-safety preparedness, inspections, pre-incident planning and practical risk reduction.
RESPOND
Rapid, professional fire, rescue and emergency response within our trained capabilities.
COORDINATE
Structured 24/7 dispatch, emergency communication and coordination of additional resources where required.
SUPPORT
Ongoing support for members, property owners and communities through planning, education and emergency preparedness.
By preparing before emergencies occur and responding decisively when they do, Asterix works to reduce the impact of fire and other emergencies on people, property and communities.

Independence & Partnerships

Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC is an independent Non-Profit Company governed by its own Board of Directors, with its own operational systems, policies, dispatch structure and emergency-response procedures. Asterix Fire & Rescue is the organisation’s operational identity for fire, rescue and emergency response.
Asterix is not operated by Rautenbach Holdings (Pty) Ltd. Rautenbach Holdings currently supports Asterix primarily as a logistics sponsor, assisting with selected equipment, transport, manpower or operational support where required.
The organisation’s ongoing work is sustained through community donations and contributions, Priority Membership fees, professional service income and other lawful support received by the NPC.
Asterix also works alongside relevant Fire Services, EMS, SAPS, Traffic Services, Disaster Management, security providers and recognised emergency-response partners when additional resources, statutory services or coordinated response are required.
Our independence allows Asterix to remain accountable to its own Board, members, supporters and the communities we serve.

Why the Name “Asterix” Matters

FB_IMG_1691758788503(1)
Asterix was more than a name. He was a deeply loved dog whose courage, loyalty and constant presence became part of our lives and, over the years, part of our firefighting and emergency-response journey.
The organisation was named in his honour because the qualities he represented are the same qualities we want Asterix Fire & Rescue to carry into every incident: courage when circumstances are difficult, loyalty to the people who depend on us, and the determination to remain present when help is needed most.
His twin brother, Geronimo, remains very much part of the Asterix family and continues his unofficial “management role” — reminding us daily where the name, the character and the heart behind this organisation came from.
Naming the organisation after Asterix is both a tribute and a promise: that the values associated with his name will continue to guide the way we prepare, respond, coordinate and support.
THE NAME IS PERSONAL. THE PROMISE BEHIND IT IS PROFESSIONAL.

“WHEN DISTRESS STRIKES — WE RESPOND.”

“PREPARED BEFORE THE CALL. READY WHEN IT MATTERS.”

Asterix exists to provide professional fire, rescue and emergency response, supported by preparedness, coordination, Priority Membership and community contributions.
