Traffic Warning – R71 Magoebaskloof Pass
Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service issued an important road safety warning to motorists travelling along the R71 Magoebaskloof Pass.
Conditions along the route were particularly challenging, with wet and slippery road surfaces and mist reducing visibility.
With accidents continuing to be reported along the route, motorists were strongly advised to approach the entire pass with extreme caution.
Please do not underestimate the conditions on Magoebaskloof. A moment of lost concentration on a wet and misty mountain road can have serious consequences.
Why These Conditions Are Dangerous
The R71 Magoebaskloof Pass is a demanding mountain route with winding bends, steep gradients and sections where visibility may already be limited.
When rain and mist are added to these conditions, the risks increase considerably.
- Reduced visibility: Mist can make it difficult to see bends, vehicles and hazards ahead.
- Slippery road surfaces: Wet roads reduce tyre grip and may increase the distance required to stop safely.
- Mountain gradients: Steep sections require careful speed control, particularly when descending.
- Unexpected obstructions: An accident or stopped vehicle may be difficult to see until a motorist is relatively close to the scene.
- Secondary accidents: Approaching an existing accident scene too quickly can place other road users and emergency responders at additional risk.
Important Safety Advice for Motorists
Asterix strongly encourages everyone using the R71 Magoebaskloof Pass during wet and misty conditions to observe the following precautions:
- Reduce your speed according to the prevailing road and visibility conditions.
- Increase your following distance considerably.
- Use dipped headlights in mist and rain. Use fog lights where appropriate.
- Avoid using high beams in dense mist, as reflected light may worsen visibility.
- Avoid unnecessary overtaking, particularly around bends and where visibility is restricted.
- Avoid sudden braking and sharp steering movements.
- Remain alert for slow-moving heavy vehicles and unexpected traffic delays.
- Follow instructions from traffic authorities and emergency personnel at accident scenes.
- If visibility becomes too poor to continue safely, stop only at a suitable location completely clear of the roadway.
Be Alert for Active Accident Scenes
With accidents being reported along the route, motorists were urged to remain alert for emergency vehicles, recovery operations and possible traffic obstructions.
Emergency responders may be working close to moving traffic, often in poor visibility and difficult weather conditions.
Please reduce your speed well before reaching an accident scene and allow sufficient space for emergency and recovery personnel to work.
Do not stop unnecessarily to observe an accident, and never photograph or film an incident while driving.
Consider Delaying Non-Essential Travel
If your journey over Magoebaskloof is not essential and conditions are particularly poor, consider postponing your trip until visibility and road conditions improve.
Motorists who must travel should allow additional time and avoid rushing.
Weather and road conditions can change rapidly along mountain routes, so drivers should continue monitoring current conditions throughout their journey.
Community Reporting Works
Asterix appreciates the community members who report motor vehicle accidents, road obstructions and dangerous conditions.
These reports help make emergency hazards known and allow appropriate services to be alerted where necessary.
If you encounter an accident or serious road hazard, report the incident as soon as it is safe to do so.
Please provide an accurate location, the direction of travel and any additional information that may assist responding services.
