Jackknifed Interlink Truck – Danie Joubert Street & R71 Wolkberg Drive

Incident Date: 8 September 2026 Location: Danie Joubert Street & R71 Wolkberg Drive intersection, Tzaneen Incident Type: Heavy-vehicle incident / road obstruction Initial Report: 20:12.
Initial Report: At approximately 20:12 on 8 September 2026, a member of the public reported on the Asterix Community Emergency Reporting Group that the intersection of Danie Joubert Street and R71 Wolkberg Drive was obstructed by a truck. Asterix responded to investigate and assist.
Situation on Arrival: On arrival, responders found that an interlink truck carrying a load of oranges had jackknifed while attempting to make a U-turn in the intersection. Because of the weight and position of the vehicle, the combination had begun leaning dangerously and was at risk of overturning. Fortunately, the driver immediately stopped and did not attempt to continue manoeuvring the truck, which helped prevent the situation from becoming significantly worse. The truck remained stranded in the intersection and created a substantial traffic obstruction.
Traffic and Scene Safety: Weather conditions added to the difficulty of the incident, with wet roads and rain reducing visibility around the scene. On instruction from Tzaneen SAPS, Asterix primarily assisted with: Traffic regulation, Scene visibility, Warning approaching motorists Helping maintain a safer working area for the recovery operation. Heavy-vehicle recovery requires considerable working space, particularly when a loaded combination is unstable and positioned within a busy intersection.
Heavy Recovery by Sonco: Fortunately, Sonco was available to assist with the specialised heavy-vehicle recovery. Their team successfully stabilised and recovered the interlink, bringing all the wheels safely back onto the roadway and straightening the vehicle combination. Once the truck had been recovered and was stable, it was able to safely leave the intersection. Asterix extends a special word of appreciation to Sonco for the skilled and professional heavy-recovery work carried out at the scene. Incidents involving heavily loaded trucks require specialised equipment, knowledge and experience, and their work played an important role in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.
Operational Commitment: Initial Report: 20:12 All Services Stood Down: 22:53 Total Incident Period: Approximately 2 hours 41 minutes During this period, Asterix assisted with traffic management and scene visibility while the heavy recovery was completed.
Working with Tzaneen SAPS: Asterix also extends its appreciation to Tzaneen SAPS for the cooperation and coordination at the scene. Traffic management during a nighttime heavy-vehicle recovery becomes particularly important when roads are wet, visibility is reduced and a major intersection is partially or completely obstructed. Good cooperation between all role-players allowed the recovery team to work while traffic around the incident was managed as safely as possible.
Outcome: The interlink truck was successfully recovered without overturning. The vehicle was straightened, all wheels were safely returned to the roadway and the truck was able to leave the intersection under its own power. All services stood down at approximately 22:53. Fortunately, what could have developed into a far more serious heavy-vehicle incident ended without the truck overturning.
Community Reporting Works: This incident was initially brought to Asterix's attention by a member of the public through the Asterix Community Emergency Reporting Group. Reports such as these help make emergency and road hazards known quickly so that the appropriate services can be alerted or dispatched. For urgent incidents, however, the fastest way to contact Asterix remains the 24/7 Emergency Line.
